BG recce Sat 17 April

A cracking day out on leg 2 (anticlockwise) in preparation for Pete's BG attempt on 19th June.

Starting at Honister we headed over Great Gable, Kirkfell, Pillar and Yewbarrow before dropping into Wasdale for a sandwich. The weather was perfect for the outing: cool and clear.

A quick jog back from Wasdale to Honister and there was still time for chips and a pint in Keswick!

Anyone who thinks they could manage a leg on the day would be more than welcome to join the party!

Another Tynedale success on the Bob Graham Round !

That's Lyth 2010

Organised by the Long Distance Walkers Association (LDWA), That's Lyth is a 23 mile challenge event for walkers and runners alike. Held on the last Sunday in January it is very much a winter event and it is advisable to be well prepared for the adverse conditions which are often enountered in the Lake District at this time of year.

The event HQ and start/finish is in the centre of Kendal at the Scout Hut with registration from 0700 hours. The event officially starts at 0800 hours although many walkers seem to register and immediately set off to get an early start on the day.

The route does require significant navigation and there is ample opportunity to stray from the defined paths and add unnecessary miles.

No such problem for Ian Brown on Sunday 31st January however as Ian was lucky enough to be guided by a veteran of the route from his former Club, Dumfries RC.

The route is a mix of terain, mostly offroad, but all very 'runable' encircling the Lyth Valley and visiting Scout Scar, Cunswick Scar and Whitbarrow Scar. The route is 23.3 Miles with an ascent of 3200 feet.

The weather was cold from the start and hardly got above freezing during the day although it made for good running conditions with the sun only breaking through late morning as the pair were completing the event.

Their time to complete the distance was a very credible 3 hours 29 minutes including stops at the 3 check points. This gave them a finishing poition of joint 12th although, due to the nature of the event, no official results are produced.

Ian thoroughly enjoyed the run and would recommend it to others who enjoy this kind of long distance event but a reccy of the route is advisable in the absence of an experienced guide!

Bob Graham Dinner 10.10.09

For completers of the Bob Graham Round, a dinner is held every 2 years to welcome new members to the club. Always on the day of the Langdale Horseshoe, members are invited to the Shap Wells Hotel for a dinner followed by a ceilidh. Most importantly though is the chance to receive your certificate and be applauded by the other 300 or so BG members in the room. It was a really great evening and a chance to meet up with old friends and make some new ones. We're already looking forward to going again in 2 years time. Anybody free to babysit?

English Championships

So, after a tough season, the English Champs draws to a close.

Despite a heavy cold, which meant that Neil was unable to contest the final race at Langdale on 10th Oct, he held onto a fantastic 5th place in the V55 category. Well done Neil.

Falstone Falcon 22.08.09

A good turnout for Tynedale with 1st man and 2nd lady trophies bagged by Phil and Beth.

This is a pretty tough race for 5 miles. The initial climb includes a lot of tussocks before heading off into the woods for some fast running and further technical sections. Don't ask me where we went as there were so many twists and turns it was impossible to know! Results thanks to NFR.

Wasdale 11.07.09

Neil lies in 2nd place in the English Champs after an epic race on a blistering hot day!

Report here (word doc)

Congratulations to Clive Short, becoming the latest Tynedale Harrier to complete the formidable Bob Graham Round. A great time too, of 21hrs 56mins. Hopefully we'll have a report soon.
