North East Counties Athletics Championships

Tynedale Harriers enjoyed a bumper medal haul at the recent North East Counties Athletics Championships held over two days at Gateshead Stadium. The Harriers provided eleven finalists who between them collected seven medals.

Greg Urwin, in his first season as an under 20, collected silver in the 400m with a time of 51.51, with 16 year old Sam Causebrook having a tremendous run for fourth place in 53.58. Greg then went on to take bronze in the 800m in 1.57.17. Beating him to silver was teammate Andy Richardson who secured second place with a time of 1.56.74.

In the under 17 age group Charlotte Sadler was the only medallist, taking gold in the 300m hurdles in 51.09, but Tynedale showed great strength in depth as they packed the finals. Sam Hearn was fourth in the 3000m, Simeon Greenwood fifth in the 800m, Dan Cunnington ninth in the 1500m and Lauren Brodie fifth in the 800m.

Under 15 boy Ian Shevlin is in outstanding from this season and it came as no surprise when he took gold in the 200m with a time of 24.3, almost a second ahead of second place. He nearly made it a sprint double, just being edged into silver in the 100m by the narrowest of margins.

Completing the medal winners was Stephanie Bruce who took silver in the under 15 girls 1500m with a time of 5.00.27.
